The History of the Color Putty® Company
![]()
| Color Putty® Company was founded in June of 1963 by Paul R. Kubly.
Paul was a professional painter from 1936 until 1960 when he became a salesman for paint sundries goods. He and his wife Evelyn, also owned a local paint store from 1946- 1962. From his experience in sales and paint sundries, Paul realized that there was a need for a colored putty product to fill imperfections in woodwork and paneling. |
| With the introduction of Color Putty, Paul was very successful
in selling putty literally from the trunk of his car. His wife, Evelyn, and their daughter, Sharon Priewe, were kept busy filling and shipping orders, as well as performing office/bookwork duties while Paul traveled 200-300 miles daily and attended various trade shows promoting Color Putty. Paul's sales and marketing skills established Color Putty as a product of quality and usefulness within the industry. |
| Originally packaged in glass jars, Color Putty introduced 16 colors in 1963
having a retail price of 59¢ cents per jar. Dedication to detail and quality reflected in sales. Within two years Color Putty outgrew its first building, moving to a larger building on April 11, 1965. The move proved to be a good one -- not only because it provided much-needed additional space, but also because a mere 4 days after the move, the infamous "Palm Sunday Tornado" struck Monroe, totally destroying the old vacated building. |
| As the poularity of Color Putty increased, so did the cost of shipping glass
jars. This lead to the packaging of putty into plastic jars in 1970. Requests for a larger jar size prompted the introduction of a one-pound jar in addition to the 3.68 oz. jar. |
| In May of 1989, Color Putty's founder, Paul Kubly, passed away. |
| With the increasing environmental concerns of today's world, Color Putty
began the development of a water-based putty similar to its current oil-based line. In January of 1996, the waterborne putty provided a compatible product to the many water-based sealers emerging in the market. In September 1997, the "Custom Blending Kit" was introduced in both oil-based and water-based putty. Intended for the contractor and professional craftsman, as well as the "do-it-yourselfer", Color Putty's innovative packaging concept includes 16 jars, a color card, and conversion chart matching the most popular stains on today's market, all in a convenient carrying case. |
| Today, Color Putty Company, Inc. is still family owned and
operated. Color Putty provides both the professional sector and "do-it-yourself" customers with the same values and high quality standards today as it did in 1963. |
